BLUF: After enjoying my time as an active putterer, I'm starting today a new job as COO at Qosmo, Inc. It's a company that pushes the boundaries of creativity using AI. No I'm not miserable! So so excited. I couldn't be more thankful to so many people who'd helped me figure out my next passion. 結論から：しばらく精力的なプータローとして活動していましたが、本日より株式会社QosmoのCOOとして働き始めます。この会社はAIを使ってクリエイティビティーの限界を押し上げることにチャレンジしています。惨めっていうのは冗談！実際最高にワクワクしています。この度は私のネクストステップ探しにたくさんの方にご相談に乗っていただき、心より感謝申し上げます。ここに至るまでの与太話にご興味がある方は、読み進めて下さい。

仕事をやめてしばらくはとにかく楽しむことにしました。好きなことしかしない。ビーチで寝転びリラックス、欲しい物を衝動買いしまくり、ジムに通ってムキムキ体作り、本を読みまくり、人に会いまくり、PodCastを録りまくり、家族と40歳の誕生日を祝って鮨を食いまくり、コロナで在庫が尽きかけたロードバイクを買って山道を走りまくり、フェスで音楽聞きまくり、サウナでととのいまくり・・・最終的には買ったばかりのバイクでサーキットを走ってるときに転倒して前腸骨を骨折。

その間ずっと考えていたことは、

何かをやらないといけないというプレッシャーが全てなくなったときに、それでもやりたいことを見つけたい。

私は仕事には150％打ち込むタイプですが、仕事がないのもなかなか刺激的デスネ。あと半年おかわりしても良い。自分の立場を気にせずに色々な人と話し、決められた目標なく自由に考える。誰に評価されるか、どうしたら周りが喜ぶか、そういうことは度外視に、自分が本当にワクワクすることは何なのか、そういう目線で自分と向かい合って、自分が深いパッションを持って打ち込めることを探し、それをどうやったら仕事にできるか探求していきました。

DataRobotで大企業のAI活用に関わりまくった結果見えてきたのは（私が言うまでもなく）データｘAIの活用範囲は実に広く、これからもますます広がり、さらに広げていくための努力は重要である以上に超楽しいということです。企業の大きさに限らずこれからは中小企業においてもそのような技術の利用は進む一方と考え、先日は日本初のDXフォーカスPEのDキャピタルにも外部アドバイザーとして関わらせていただく機会を頂きました。

この可能性はビジネスに限らず、既に広く社会でDX音頭が歌われ、先日もブログに書いたようにスポーツなどの領域にも大きな影響を与えています。私自身、大の登山好きということもあり、登山をDX化しているYAMAPさんのデータAIアドバイザーもさせていただいています。AIの活用範囲は構造化しやすい課題解決型のユースケースを超え、例えば研究開発の領域では、AIモデルを使うことで新しい素材や薬の候補化合物を見つけることにも活用が広がっています。そのような人間の探求力を拡張するような方向性は、ビジネス価値はもちろん人類の発展にとても根源的なインパクトを有していると考えてます。

人間の根元的な能力を拡張するようなビッグテーマの中で私が常に関心を持っていたのは、新しいものを生み出す創造力・クリエイティビティーです。アートや音楽などの芸術分野やゲーム、メディアなどのエンターテイメントにおけるAIの活用もビジネス分野での活用と並行して進みつつあり、GANという生成型のディープラーニングモデルを使って絵画や写真が生成されたというような話は誰もが聞いたことがあるでしょう。そんな分野に熱意を抱くようになって出会ったのが、Computational Creativityというコンセプトを発展させて「創るためのAI」という本を書いたQosmo, Inc.の徳井さんでした。

AIが生成した絵や音楽などが、果たして本当に芸術なのかどうなのか、という果てしない議論がある一方で、徳井さんが提唱しているのは「AIと創造的に付き合う」ことや、考えてもいなかった方向性に「AIを誤用」することによって、クリエイティビティーを発展させるという考え方。AIと一緒に踊るフラメンコダンサーやAIと人間が交互にDJするプロジェクトなどはその考え方を体現しています。

このような考え方がこれから世界に具体的にどのような形で影響を与えていくのかは、まだまだ未知数ですが、だからこそやる価値があるんだよ！またアートやエンターテイメントに限らず、「創るためのAI」は企業においても、新しい発想を生み出す上で重要な役割を果たすことができるかもしれません。

そんなわけで、この度Qosmoという新しい場所で新しいチャレンジをします。これまでとは違った新しいカタチで今後も皆さんとお付き合いさせていただくのを楽しみにしています！

I took my joblessness very seriously and decided to do everything just as I please. Went to beaches to relax, buy things spontaneously, workout at gym, read books that I always wanted to, meet as many people as I could, record podcasts, celebrate my 40th birthday with family and eat sushi till I bloat, bought a road bike and cycle around mountains, went to music festivals … until I broke my hip bone in a motorcycle accident on a race track.

What I had in mind all that time was

What will I find if I have no pressure as to what I have to do?

Joblessness allowed me to talk to people without a position and think freely about future. I’d developed my habit to just go talk to people whom I’m interested in. No need to worry how people evaluate me or what will keep people happy. That was a way to search for my deep passion and think how I can turn that into a job.

My experience at DataRobot working with hundreds or large corporations wishing to leverage data and AI lead me to believe the breadth of application of these technologies will only grow and the efforts to accelerate it is more fun than it is (very) important. Thousands more medium to small companies will follow, who I’ll be helping externally as an advisor to recently announced DCapital, the first DX focus PE in Japan.

It doesn’t stop there. The whole society sings the song of DX lately and many non-business discipline considers presence of data and AI is ever more helpful, such as sports as I recently wrote about in this blog. As a mountain lover myself, I’ve been an Data&AI Advisor to YAMAP that is DXing mountaineering. The applicability of AI is growing beyond easy-to-structure problem-solving type but in an example of drug discovery or new material search, AI is augmenting fundamental human capacity to discover new knowledge.

One of the fundamental human capacities augmented by AI, that I developed immense interest in, is Creativity. Application of AI in art and entertainment has been making big progresses particularly around GAN as I’m sure most people have seen those images generated by the DL algorithm. As I dug deeper into AI in art, I was fortunate enough to meet Nao Tokui from Qosmo, Inc. who recently wrote an amazing book called “AI for Those Who Create” (my poor translation) building upon his concept of Computational Creativity.

While there’s a never-ending discussions around whether such AI-generated art or music is really true art, which he also analyzes deeply, what he proposes in the book is to “creatively collaborate with AI” and/or to “misuse AI” to expand human creativity beyond otherwise achievable. Qosmo projects such as a flamenco dancer dancing with AI and AI DJ playing back-to-back with human DJ are good embodiment of his philosophy.

There’s much unknown as to how this philosophy will affect the world, which for me makes it all the more valuable to work on it. The chances are that “AI for Those who create” can play an important role in unlikely places such as large enterprises.

So that’s the longer version on how I’m starting my new challenge at Qosmo. I’m looking forward to working with you in ways we never imagined before!
